Cue tips and shafts
Difference between carbon and wooden shafts/tips
Cue tips and shafts
Cue tips and shafts are essentially the same part of a cue. In the carom world, the term 'tip' is usually used (also called 'flesh' in Belgium), while in the pool world, the term ' shaft' is used. The tip or shaft forms the top part of the cue. The end of it is called the ferrule , butt , or ferrule , and on top of that is the tip .
The ferrule has an important protective function: it absorbs the forces generated during the stroke, preventing damage to the wood or carbon of the shaft. The ferrule is securely glued to the tip with a pin connection. The length of the ferrule varies by discipline. In carom billiards, it is usually shorter, while pool cues often have a longer ferrule due to the greater forces generated in pool billiards.
On top of the ferrule sits the tip , which is almost always glued on. A tip is traditionally made of leather.
Cheaper French kisses are usually made of cowhide, such as elk, buffalo, or cow leather. These consist of a single pressed layer.
High-quality cue tips are made from pigskin and consist of multiple layers (usually 5 to 10). Due to this layered construction, the tip retains its shape better and billiard chalk adheres much more effectively.
Tops and shafts are traditionally made of maple wood . There are two main variants:
Artificially dried European maple : grows faster, has less dense fibers, and shrinks less well. As a result, more energy is lost during impact.
Canadian maple : grows slowly, has stronger fibers and a better cell structure. This ensures more efficient energy transfer to the ball and a more stable feel.
In addition, more and more carbon shafts are being produced nowadays. These offer very consistent stiffness, low deflection, and are insensitive to temperature and humidity.
Our assortment includes top brands such as Artemis , Longoni , Mister 100 , Gabriëls , and Molinari , offering a wide range of choices for every billiards enthusiast. In short, cue tips and shafts form the core of an optimal billiards experience. A variety of tips or shafts are available, each with unique characteristics that contribute to the quality of play. It is of great importance to properly maintain these components and replace them if necessary.
